those who died in service
June 3, 2004
The U.S. Embassy community
commemorated Memorial Day Tuesday (June 1) by raising the
U.S. flag, singing the “Star Spangled Banner”
and “American the Beautiful” in the courtyard
outside the embassy.
Ambassador Martin J. Silverstein, accompanied
by his wife, Audrey, officiated, and requested a moment
of silence. Community Liaison Office Coordinators Sarina
Penn and Renee Savastuk read comments on Memorial Day written
by a Doorgunner on a Blackhawk Helicopter with the U.S.
Army's 10th Mountain Division, serving in Operation Restore
Hope, Somalia, Africa. For text, visit: http://www.geocities.com/Pentagon/Base/9299/memorialday.html.
Boy Scouts from Troop 908 and Cub Scouts
from Pack 3908 in Montevideo led the community in saying
“The Pledge of Allegiance.” The ceremony was
closed with the song, “Taps.”
