FOURTH OF JULY IN URUGUAY
U.S. Embassy celebrates American Independence with special events.

In commemoration of U.S. Independence Day (July 4) the U.S. Embassy, Montevideo, planned and participated in a full slate of activities, ceremonies and events.

Ambassador Martin J. Silverstein was interviewed by the daily newspaper, El Pais, for the annual Fourth of July supplement. The Ambassador also recorded a radio message for Independence Day.

Ambassador Silverstein and his wife, Audrey, also hosted dinners at the official residence. On June 29 and 30 business leaders of U.S. firms in Uruguay were invited to two separate events. And on July 1, a dinner was held, with the President of Uruguay Jorge Batlle and members of his Cabinet as special guests.

Joined by members of the US military in Uruguay, Ambassador Silverstein laid a wreath at the grave of General Artigas, the patron of Uruguay on Friday (July 2).

The official Fourth of July reception was held Friday (July 2) at the Sheraton Hotel.

An art and essay contest, with the theme “Common Values,” was conducted and prizes awarded June 18 at the U.S. Embassy.
