U.S. Embassy, APHIS attend EXPOACTIVA Fair in Mercedes, Soriano

U.S. Embassy display at ExpoActivaThe US Embassy participated in the Expoactiva Fair in Mercedes, Soriano, April 22 to 25. The fair was organized by the Soriano Rural Association of Uruguay. Soriano is one of the most productive agricultural areas in Uruguay. More than 7,000 farmers and representatives from agricultural machinery companies visited the fair.

Uruguayan Minister of Agriculture Martin Aguirrezabala also attended the event, as well as presidential candidates Dr. Guillermo Stirling and Dr. Luis Alberto Lacalle, among others.

The Embassy Commercial Section along with the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) maintained a booth to answer agricultural questions and share information from US agricultural machinery companies. More than 80 companies provided product information (such as catalogues, brochures, CD-ROM, videos) to distribute among interested people. Also, the Embassy Commercial Section gathered contact information from some 200 business representatives to forward to companies in the US.

More than 75 people attended a presentation April 23 by Dr. Theresa Boyle of APHIS on Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) surveillance in the U.S.
