U.S. Ambassador Martin J. Silverstein praises local government efforts

[U.S. Embassy photo by Vince Alongi]A U.S. Embassy delegation headed by Ambassador Martin J. Silverstein visited on April 13 the city of Fray Bentos located in the Department of Rio Negro. Governor (Intendente) Francisco Centurion welcomed the delegation, which included the Embassy's Deputy Chief of Mission James Williard, Consul Stephen Barneby, Public Diplomacy Officer Linda Gonzalez, and Management Officer David Savastuk.

During the visit, the delegation met with a number of local officials, including House Representative Omar Laffluf, aldermen Jorge Picart, Beatriz Castillo and Maria Angelica Balarini, Secretaries Ernesto Bonetti and Luis Rivero, and Chief of Police Juan Balbi. In a press conference, Ambassador Silverstein praised Rio Negro and the work being done by the local government.

Governor Centurion accompanied the delegation on a tour of the old slaughterhouse and meatpacking plant "Frigorifico Anglo", now a museum, and on an earlier visit to the Barrio Anglo Public School where Ambassador Silverstein presented a donation of hundreds of notebooks and other school supplies. The notebooks had special covers designed by a former student of the school, Elisa Perdomo Moure, winner of last year's Drawing and Essay Contest for the Fourth of July celebration. Elisa was present to receive a recognition award from Ambassador Silverstein.
