Accompanied by Rio Negro's Governor (Intendente) Francisco Centurion and a U.S. Embassy delegation that included the Embassy's Deputy Chief of Mission James Williard, Consul Stephen Barneby, Public Diplomacy Officer Linda Gonzalez, and Management Officer David Savastuk, Ambassador Silverstein visited the Binational Center Alianza of Fray Bentos on April 13.

Map of UruguayFray Bentos is a city with a population of nearly 20,000 located in the Department (State) of Rio Negro, approximately 180 miles northwest of Montevideo, near the border with Argentina. The Binational Center (BNC) of Fray Bentos was inaugurated in 1975 and it now has over 250 students making it one of the largest BNC in Uruguay's interior. The center has been projecting an excellent image to the community; the director Sara Guelman and teachers are constantly promoting American culture through courses and the organization of various cultural events.

During the visit, Ambassador Silverstein presented the Alianza with a collection of English teaching books and a special coffee table edition of a book about the United States.
