Representatives from Russia, Canada, United States, France, United Kingdom, Poland, Italy, Germany, the Czech Republic, Romania, Greece, and Netherlands, along with Uruguayan government officials and hundreds of special guests, participated last night in an event commemorating the end of WW II in Europe. The event was convened by the Uruguayan Commission for the 60th Anniversary of the End of World War II, and presided over by Tomas De Mattos, director of the National Library; Hector Gros Espiell, former Uruguayan Ambassador to France and Costa Rica, and Adolfo Perez Piera, Mayor of Montevideo.

The inauguration of the event was followed by a historical overview of VE Day delivered by Ambassador Gros Espiell who stressed the fact that this was not a celebration of victory of one nation over the other, but rather the celebration of victory over fascism and oppression. Ambassador Gros Espiell reiterated the importance of memory and reconciliation as the key to world peace.

After the ceremony, U.S. Ambassador Martin J. Silverstein congratulated two American WW II veterans now residing in Uruguay, Frank Gray and John Wells.
