Ambassador Martin J. Silverstein and his wife Audrey departed Montevideo with their six children after nearly four years of service as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Uruguay. During his tenure Ambassador Silverstein was instrumental in preventing Uruguay's economic collapse by facilitating a U.S. Treasury loan to salvage the local banking system, and reopening beef import markets in record time. A strong advocate of human rights, and untiring promoter of bilateral issues in democracy, trade, and security.

As a local newspaper headline recently stated, Ambassador Silverstein exemplified, "An Ambassador Who Is A Good Friend Of This Country," and continued, "He has to receive recognition from Uruguayans not only for the results his service produced, but also because his service was selfless, caring, and demonstrated that he was a sincere friend who was present when we most needed a friendly hand."
