The formal presentation to Ambassador Martin J. Silverstein of the flag that flew over the U.S. Embassy Montevideo on July 4, 2005, and the Ambassadorial flag that stood in his office throughout his tenure, marked the imminent departure of the Ambassador after a distinguished period of service of 3 years and 9 months.

Deputy Chief of Mission, Mr. James Williard praised the Ambassador for his skill and dedication in representing American values and his untiring efforts to deepen Uruguayan and American friendship. In describing Ambassador Silverstein's leadership, hard work, and determination Williard stated, "your record of achievement, your personal integrity, your humanity and your abundant faith remain intact, unchallenged and strengthened. You have earned our respect and admiration and you richly deserve this tribute for serving your country so brilliantly".

In his remarks, Ambassador Silverstein gave heartfelt thanks to the entire staff of the embassy gathered for the occasion. He expressed that as the child of poor immigrants he is deeply grateful for the chance to represent the United States as a land of abundant opportunities. The Ambassador stressed the importance of never hesitating to relate to the Uruguayan people in a personal and compassionate manner.

The Ambassador notably made great efforts to obtain institutional help during Uruguay’s financial crisis and to promptly reopen the export markets for Uruguayan beef. The Ambassador and his wife Audrey also took a deep interest in the well being of the citizens of Uruguay, especially children in need. He personally carried medical supplies into the country and helped secure medical treatment for critically ill children.

Frequently the Ambassador remarked that he takes with him an abiding affection for the Uruguayan people. He also departs with the gratitude and respect of the entire Embassy community.
