In a blustery July wind, U.S. Ambassador
Martin J. Silverstein and his wife Audrey Silverstein laid
a wreath at the monument of Uruguay's founding father, General
Jose Gervasio Artigas, in Plaza Independencia to mark the
Independence Day of the United States. Flanked by an honor
guard of Uruguayan Blandengues Unit and members of the United
States Armed Forces, the Ambassador and his wife paid homage
to Uruguay’s national hero.
It is a tradition for foreign missions to show respect to
Uruguay’s great leader on the occasion of their respective
Jose Gervasio Artigas widely admired as a champion of freedom
and an important figure in the history of liberty. A monument
to him also stands in Washington, D.C.
