U.S. Exchange Program Teachers Visit Their Uruguayan Counterparts

Eight visiting teachers from U.S. schools will be in Uruguay for 6 weeks

Posted: July 22, 2005

Every year the National Administration of Public Education and the Fulbright Commission invite 8 to 10 teachers from all parts of the U.S. to visit Uruguay and exchange experiences with their Uruguayan counterparts. Each teacher visits three Uruguayan Full-Time primary schools where the director or a teacher has participated from a similar experience in the United States. Many of these schools have an English Immersion Program.

The Fulbright Teacher and Exchange Program provides opportunities for teachers and administrators to enhance cooperation and strengthen mutual understanding among educators in Uruguay and the United States through direct exchanges. The exchange is designed to create strong linkages between participants and communities, to promote innovative ideas in teaching and programs, and to ensure a long-standing impact on participating schools both in Uruguay and the United States.

The U.S. Embassy's Chargé D'Affaires, Linda Gonzalez, hosted a dinner on July 11 to welcome the eight visiting teachers and their Uruguayan hosts who are participating in the program.

The Fulbright Commission sponsors the exchange program aimed at teachers and school administrators. Under the program, every February twenty Uruguayan teachers visit schools in all regions of the U.S. The Uruguayan government (GOU) began the program with funding from the World Bank in 2001.

The U.S. Embassy Montevideo has been extensively involved in matching the Uruguayan schools with U.S. partners and providing support. There are now 79 Uruguayan principals and teachers from more than 60 Uruguayan elementary schools involved in the program. This includes schools in very poor and remote area. The program is highly regarded by both the GOU and the educational community.
