The United States
Office of Defense Cooperation (ODC), U.S. Embassy Montevideo,
sponsored an orientation and professional education visit
for the Uruguayan Army Command and General Staff College
(CGSC) to the United States from July 30 to August 7, 2005.
The Uruguayan CGSC has participated in this
annual event for the past several years, sending a group
of students and instructor cadre to the United States for
professional development and military orientation.
This year the group visited the U.S. Pentagon,
Arlington National Cemetery, Fort Belvoir, Fredericksburg
National Military Battlefield, Norfolk Naval Station, Joint
Forces Command, Joint Forces Staff College, Fort Monroe,
and the U.S. Coast Guard Atlantic District in Hampton Roads.
The purpose of the visit was to introduce
the Uruguayan staff college students to U.S. military installations,
joint doctrine and training, U.S. military history, culture
and professional development.
Twenty Uruguayan officers led by COL Edison
Yarzabal and LTC Freddy Braga and one U.S. escort officer
(LTC Matthew Anderson, U.S. ODC) completed the weeklong
trip to Washington DC and Norfolk, VA.
The exchange was a tremendous success and
both Uruguayan and U.S. military officers commented on the
benefits of maintaining positive military exchange programs
between Uruguay and the United States.
