The U.S. Embassy Montevideo co-sponsored the II International Congress and III National Congress of Universities of Management and Administration, held August 18 - 19 in Montevideo. Guest speaker, Dr. Gerald McDermott, Assistant Professor Management Department of the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, made the opening presentation immediately after the President of Uruguay, Tabare Vazquez, convened the Congress with introductory remarks.

The more than 500 people attending the Congress included executives of the most important businesses in Uruguay, government officials, and academics from all the Universities in Uruguay. The theme of this year’s Congress was “Administration: a key to sustainable development. Uruguay: toward the effective management of change”.

The U.S. Embassy's Chargé D'Affaires Jim Nealon and A/Deputy Chief of Mission Linda Gonzalez attended the event.

Professor McDermott demonstrated with concrete examples from his research how enterprises could adopt a strategy of “upgrading”, the continuous improvement of products and practices, through creating decentralized but coordinated organizations, by involving and empowering stakeholders, by regular communication, and by establishing public and private partnerships.
