U.S. Army Officer Awarded the Uruguayan '18 de Mayo de 1811' Medal

Medal is presented to Uruguayan and foreign military officers for outstanding achievement and meritorious service

High ranking Uruguayan Army officers and Defense Attachés from several countries in the region attended the August 26, 2005 ceremony commemorating Uruguay's independence.

During a ceremony held at Uruguayan Army headquarters August 26, 2005, commemorating the 180th anniversary of Uruguay's independence (August 25, 1825), the Uruguayan Army high command awarded U.S. Army LTC Matthew D. Anderson with the distinguished "Medalla 18 de Mayo de 1811". The medal is presented to Uruguayan and foreign military officers for outstanding achievement and meritorious service.

The Battle of Las Piedras of May 18, 1811, is considered the most important victory against the Spanish Royalist Army by Uruguayan rebel troops trying to liberate their territory from the Spaniards.

LTC Anderson is currently serving as Army Section Chief for the United States Office of Defense Cooperation (ODC), at the U.S. Embassy in Montevideo, Uruguay.
