U.S. Sponsors Training on Hazardous Materials for Uruguayan Emergency Workers

First responders learn skills to ensure personal and public safety

Posted: October 21, 2005

The United States government, through the Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance (OFDA), is sponsoring a First Responders to Hazardous Materials Incidents course for Uruguayan firefighters, police and other emergency workers. The course, conducted by Uruguayan instructors, is part of a USAID/OFDA technical assistance and training program designed to provide emergency personnel with the knowledge and skills to identify the presence of hazardous materials and carry out the necessary initial steps to ensure personal and public safety, as well as protection of property and the environment.

During the opening ceremonies, October 21, 2005, U.S. Chargé D'Affaires James Nealon stated, "in today's world, the firefighters, police, and other emergency workers have to be constantly on guard against the ravages of nature, disease and terrorism. Let us spare no efforts in training those who are always ready to respond to our families, and our society, and us when danger threatens. We can never show enough gratitude to the brave people who are asked to act calmly and effectively in the most unexpected and terrible circumstances."
