The Embassy Participates in End of School Term Celebration

Part of the embassy's continued commitment to education in Uruguay

Posted: December 19, 2005

As it is customary in Uruguay, schools celebrate the close of term with colorful music and dance pageants. It was no exception for the Martin Luther King School located in the outskirts of Montevideo in one of the poorest neighborhoods of the city. Parents, officials, and other guests were invited to participate in the festivities hosted by principal Carmen Lopez. Sixth grade students performed the traditional Uruguayan folk dance "Pericon Nacional", and this year's flag bearers passed on the national colors to next year's grade six students..

The acting Deputy Chief of Mission for the U.S. Embassy Montevideo Linda Gonzalez, along with Assistant Public Affairs officer Thomas Hamm and Mrs, Kristin Nealon, wife of Chargé D'Affaires James Nealon, attended the event.

The U.S. Embassy took the opportunity to make a donation of notebooks, school hats, a digital video camera, and a DVD projector as part of an ongoing series of donations to this school, and the embassy's overall commitment to education.
